Shivaji Maharaj Bhosle was known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. a hindu king belongs to Bhonsle clan.

Shivaji beat Adilshah of Bijapur this led to the birth of Maratha Empire, in the year 1674 he was crowned as Chhatrapati of Raigarh.

He preferred Marathi and Sanskrit as compared to Persian in various administrative departments, Shivaji was an orthodox Hindu who never accepted Muslim rule.

1. Early life


Shivaji was born on 6 April 1627 or 19 February 1630 at the fort of Shivneri near Junnar in Pune district.his mother Jijabai named him Shivaji in honor of lord Shiva.
Shivaji's father name was Shahji Bhosle and was a Maratha general. when Shivaji was born the power of Deccan was shared by Islamic sultanates Golconda, Ahmednagar, and Bijapur. Shahji's jagir was in Pune with his small army.

2. Hind Swaraj


Shivaji and his family were deeply devoted to their religion, Shivaji studied two great Hindu epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata; he was deeply influenced by religious teachings and company of Sufi saints. Shivaji was a good outdoor man and received a little education but he was not able to read and write.
Shivaji was taken to Banglore at the age of 12 for training. Shivaji got married to Saibai in 1640. in 1646 Shivaji showed his concept about Hindu Swaraj.

3. Mughals


Since 1657 there was a kind relation between Shivaji and Mughals, the conflict with Mughals began when two officers of Shivaji raided Mughal territory near Ahmednagar.
In the raid of Junnar Shivaji carried of 3000,000 hun in cash and 200 horses.as responding to this raid Aurangzeb sent Nasir Khan, who defeated the force of Shivaji at Ahmednagar.

4. Battles


Shivaji fought many battles mostly were against Mughals but he never steps back. he was truly devoted to his religion.

5. Death


In March 1680 Shivaji fell ill and suffered a lot from fever. Shivaji died on 3 April 1680 at the age of 52.

On his death, his childless wife Putalabai committed Sati by jumping on his funeral. After the death of Shivaji, his youngest wife Soyarabai planned to pass the crown to his son Rajaram.



Shivaji was truly a hero who fought for the safety of his religion.
